简介
首席检察官。1888年出生于美国罗德岛州，1910年在布朗大学（Brown University）获学士和硕士学位，之后进入哈佛大学学习，并于1913年取得法学学士学位（LL。B）。美国介入第一次世界大战后应征入伍，随美军第137野战炮兵营赶赴欧洲作战。退伍后，回到美国担任俄亥俄州首席检察官特别助理，1933年7月调任美国总检察长特别助理，同年10月，升任美国助理总检察长，兼司法部刑事处主任。在任上经手处理了诸如“机枪凯利”这样的特大恶性案件，为他赢得了声望。1945年11月29日，被杜鲁门总统任命为搜查日本战争犯罪的法律顾问团团长，翌年即被指派为远东国际军事法庭首席检察官。他在对日本战犯的着力追究和在法庭上的积极表现，起到了对东京审判的主导作用。审判结束后被任命为联合国巴勒斯坦协调委员会的美方代表。1954年12月8日逝世于美国。
